“Minerva gave me 5 thorough treatments, however after the 2nd one I was running up and down the hiking trails without pain. I was completely pain free for about 4 months when I decided to go back in for maintenance. I am now a firm believer of acupuncture. Thanks so much, Minerva!”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s the theory behind acupuncture?

According to Western medical theory, acupuncture works by stimulating parts of the brain and stimulating the body to release natural biomolecules, such as neurotransmitters, vasodilators and hormones. Although the scientific community does not fully understand how this occurs, it notes acupuncture has a noticeable positive effect on health.

Chinese medical theory explains acupuncture as balancing the body’s Qi (chee). Qi is defined as a form of bioenergy that runs along 12 major meridians in the body. When Qi is blocked it reveals itself as an imbalance or illness. Chinese medicine is about diagnosing the imbalance and then balancing it through acupuncture and other natural techniques.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture addresses health imbalances that show up as diseases, disorders and discomfort. The procedure of acupuncture can be compared to a turning on a light. When you walk into a room you look for a switch on the wall to turn on the light in the ceiling. The source of the light is not in the same place as the mechanism of controlling the light. Similarly, when you go to an acupuncturist for therapy, the practitioner treats the underlying health issue that is causing the symptoms. Treatment may occur in a completely different place of the body, but it acts as the switch to turn off the source of the symptoms elsewhere.

A good example is the use of acupuncture to induce labor. Acupuncturists are taught that there are a few points that are absolutely forbidden to use with pregnant women, as they will actually induce labor. But when the time for birth arrives, studies have shown that using acupuncture to induce labor reduces the active (painful) phase of labor by an average of 3.6 hours.

Do acupuncture needles hurt?

Most patients report not feeling a thing; many don’t even notice when the procedure has begun. Some people report feeling a slight pinch. Acupuncture needles are entirely different from standard needles, which are large and form a blunt, wedge-shaped tip in order to inject substances into the veins. In fact, one standard 18-gauge hypodermic needle is bigger than 40 acupuncture needles combined!

Can acupuncture help with my problem?

Thousands of years of real life success and countless modern medical studies show that acupuncture definitely works. Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, is as often effective as traditional Western methods but is associated with fewer negative side effects or risks.

What should I expect on my first visit?

The “getting to know you” part of your first visit will last up to 30 minutes. During this time, we will collect a complete history and detailed evaluation of your lifestyle and health by asking in-depth questions and/or performing exams. Having a comprehensive understanding of your wellness is a vital part of Eastern medicine, because we treat your whole person, rather than just the symptoms of your condition. Following this, your first acupuncture treatment will last another 30 to 60 minutes.

Subsequent visits will be much shorter, lasting about an hour total.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. Acupuncturists receive thorough training in anatomy to ensure they properly place each needle. Acupuncture needles are also safe and arrive pre-sterilized and individually packed. They are immediately disposed of after use.

On average, liability insurance for acupuncturists costs $600.00 per year, whereas primary care physicians pay an average of $12,000.00 per year. This indicates insurance companies deem acupuncture 20 times less risky than your doctor.

What side effects might I experience during or after acupuncture?

Some patients will begin to notice immediate relief of symptoms after acupuncture therapy. Other sensations associated with the healing effects of acupuncture (called de qi “duh-chee”) include tingling, warmth, heaviness, slight cramping, distention or achy sensations in the body. Most patients report any discomfort as mild.

How often would I need to come in for a treatment?

Most acupuncture programs are weekly. Treatments may be given two or three times a week if the condition is acute and painful until the pain recedes. Because every patient is unique, every treatment is unique. Exact duration depends on the condition, your basic level of health and how your body responds to acupuncture.

What should I do before and after my treatments?

  • Eat a light meal before your treatment. Do not eat an unusually large meal, smoke excessively or drink alcohol before or after your treatment.

  • Wear shorts or loose clothing so that your arms, legs and possibly abdomen are accessible.

  • Plan your activities so you can get some rest after treatment, or at least do not have to perform strenuous work. This is especially important for the first few visits.

  • Do not exercise or engage in strenuous physical activity for six hours before or after each treatment.

  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages or non-prescription drugs before treatments. Substance abuse (alcohol or drugs) will seriously interfere with the effectiveness.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

We are not contracted with any insurance companies, allowing us to offer affordable rates to all, insured or not.

Most insurance companies cover our services and we work with them as an out-of-network provider rather than a participating provider. We are happy to submit an “Out of Network” claim to your insurance company for reimbursement.

If you do have insurance and will be relying on reimbursement for our care, it is generally helpful to call your insurance company and confirm that you have out-of-network benefits.

Do I have to believe in it for it to work?

Acupuncture is not magic, and it will work whether you believe in it or not. The successful results of acupuncture speak for themselves. Acupuncture and other Chinese methods are especially effective when all other treatment methods have failed, as this indicates a system imbalance.
